A group of customers refused to tip their 20-year-old server at a Carraba’s Italian restaurant in Overland Park, KS on the grounds that his homosexuality is “an affront to God.” According to KCTV Fox 19, the server went to the table after the group of customers left and found a note explaining their decision.

“Thank you for your service, it was excellent. That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD. Queers do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours,” said the note. “We hope you will see the tip your queer choices made you lose out on, and plan accordingly. It is never too late for GOD’s love, but none shall be spared for queers. May GOD have mercy on you.”

Friends and supportive customers plan to dine at the restaurant Friday evening as a show of support for the waiter who received the hateful note. He has declined to give his name or go on camera and has asked people not to try and give him money.

He said in a statement, “The offers to help pay me back are much appreciated, but not at all needed. I’d prefer to let my work ethic and my service do the talking, nothing else.”

  1. Immediately my first response to reading this is why did the couple have to do this? It would have been much easier and much less of a big story if they just simply refused to tip the waiter and went on their way without saying anything and keeping their thoughts to themselves. I feel that the server had a pretty good attitude about it all and I admire him for that because if I was a homosexual I sure would not have wanted to receive that note.
My advice to the server is to just keep on working. They did say he did an exceptional job as their server and that is something that he can control so he should just keep working hard and should not listen to this rude couple.
I also thought it was very cool that he is denying interviews and camera time. He is not trying to cash in on this unfortunate and mean thing that happened to him which is very rare in our day and age.
Overall I thought the 20 year old (my age) handled the situation very well and professionally and hopefully he is working at a decent restaurant that is paying him well enough so he does not miss the tips he did not receive from the group.

  2. These are the kinds of people who give Christians a bad name. The fact that they went out of their way just to write him a note that explained why they didn’t tip him was sad and absolutely ridiculous. It was unnecessary. Next, can i just say that his sexuality should have nothing to do with his service and therefor should not have to reflect in his tip. Unless he was late bringing out there food because he was making out with his partner in front of the kitchen window for everyone to see, then this should not have even been an issue. I think it’s really sad how people think its such a terrible thing for people to be homosexual. Sure it’s not something i really enjoy seeing in public, but it’s no harm to me and im most definitely not going to go out of my way to be hurtful to someone for it, they can’t help who they are attracted to. I especially don’t think that was appropriate to do in a persons place of work. That’s like saying, “hey sorry i can’t tip you because i saw you wearing seahawks gear yesterday and im a steelers fan”….like what?! I do not understand how that’s relevant. I still would also like to know how they even knew he was homosexual….stalkers

When reading the title of this story I thought something negative was going to be an outcome. I know in the bible it’s says all forms of homosexuality is prohibited. I understand that we have people that follow the bible word for word but, we are in a new time period and era. Things have changed tremendously since those times and sexuality has changed as well. I believe whatever makes you happy go for it. You shouldn’t be punished by dating someone you like and love. My mom always says,” Whatever you like, I love.” People need to be more considered about other people lives and how they live. His sexuality shouldn’t have anything to do with his service. They even said everything was great but, we notice your sexuality. For example, that’s like me not tipping a waiter because I’m raised and born in the United States and he/she is from Italy and I don’t believe in foreigners coming into the U.S so, they don’t get a tip from me. That’s how sad this story sounds and the group of customers should feel just as bad. He’s losing money for being a good host and homosexual. That’s not right and everybody should stand up for what is right. The waiter was very mature about this situation and handled it very well without reacting in a negative way. The world we live in today still has discrimination and racism lingering throughout the world. Our universe changed so why can’t we change too?

  4. As an atheist i think they excessive preached their beliefs. Scientific research shows that homosexuality also exist in nature. When we go to a restaurant for dinner, giving tips to the waiter is the evaluation of their services.there is not any other factors that should be associated besides the quality of service. Those Christians were trying to instill their own opinion to others by giving them bad feelings. Whether or not this person’s sexual orientation is how, as long as he does not affect other people, then no one can accuse him. However those Christians’ behavior distort christianity‘s original idea which is helping others but not forcing others to comply to their wishes or agaist each others.(this is just my understanding about religions. Generally, good religions teach people to help each other, or find peace of mind and similiar goal.)

  5. Right when i read this article I was in shock. The reason why I was in shock is because it was completely wrong, uncalled for, and disrespectful. I understand what the bible said but it is NOT okay to show the actions towards a waiter that is actually helping you and trying to get as many tips as he can. I understand when some customers aren’t capable of tipping the waiters because of money or because of how the waiting horrid the service was. But if you go out to eat you should be able to tip because going out costs a lot of money. Without the waiter knowing the reason why he didn’t get a tip is what made him confused. The disrespectful side came in when the customers left notes saying what the bible says and how they cant tip “queers.” I find it very ironic why they would say that. The only thing i can think of is they really didn’t want to give a tip because of an excuse on the waiters sexuality.

  6. Homosexuality is a large debate in society today. The topic has become more accepted and is looked at by many as a choice versus years ago when much of society frowned upon it. This new outlook on the topic has given those who choose this lifestyle to be more open. We have seen our country overcome issues of racism, but that does not mean there are not those who still disagree with the progress we have made. This can also be the same idea for homosexuality. Many who don’t agree with this choice follow the lines of the bible. Specifically Christians have been given the name of unaccepting, and this story is an example of their unwillingness to encourage it. A person’s personal decision should not affect other components in their life. The waiter’s sexuality should not reflect his service and differ him from receiving the same benefits that other waiters would receive. His tip should only be based off his performance while serving the couple. For all the couple knows the waiter could be a nice gentlemen who is just making a choice such as this one because it is what makes him happy. People need to be more understanding and considerate of those around them. In the end we all have our own opinions, which is fine, but we cannot choose what makes other people happy. Instead we should be concerned for ourselves and maintain focus on only us. Another person’s happiness is their choice, and they should feel free to choose for themselves without the judgment of others.

  7. These are the people that give religion a bad name. It is completely acceptable for people to strongly believe in their religion, but when it becomes extremely unacceptable is when people are outrageously rude to someone that may not share their same beliefs. The fact that these people went out of their way to write such an offending note to the waiter to explain why they did not tip him is completely outrageous. It was not necessary for them to leave a note, and let alone telling the waiter that his lifestyle is an affront to God, and that it never to late to receive God’s acceptance and love. Honestly what these people did was absolutely disgusting, I believe that that is the only word to describe this act. The waiters sexual orientation should have nothing to do with how good of waiter he was. A waiters tip should be determined by their service and nothing else should be factored in when tipping at a restaurant. He lost his tip because of his sexuality even though he had excellent service, which was said by the group of people that left the note. The waiter had an extremely good attitude about this whole situation. I admire him for not going on camera and being interviewed. He is clearly being the bigger person about this, and he is making sure it does not get out of hand. I am glad that this was brought to the public’s eye though, this just proves that our world still has a lot of changing to do. I am so upset that this happened to that young man, like I said it was digesting act and those people should be ashamed by their actions.

  8. This article is extremely infuriating. Who would ever have the audacity to leave such a cruel and hurtful note? I know from personal experience how cruel customers can sometimes be. One of my customer’s steaks was cooked incorrectly and I brought him a new one, but he tipped me with lots of pennies and dimes which spilled all over the floor when I opened the checkbook. My point is that customers can be rude, but the fact that a customer refused to tip their waiter based on his sexual orientation, and then left a note explaining why. They wrote, “Thank you for your service, it was excellent. That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD. Queers do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours. We hope you will see the tip your queer choices made you lose out on, and plan accordingly. It is never too late for GOD’s love, but none shall be spared for queers. May GOD have mercy on you.” Not every single person in the world wants to be accepted by God, not every single person attends church or believes in a religion. The waiter’s sexual orientation has no effect on his service and skills as a waiter, and shouldn’t concern his customers. His sexual orientation is not a disease, and the fact that they wrote “plan accordingly” is disgusting. What if I refused to tip a waiter because he’s Christian? A person can’t up and change their lifestyle just because some judgmental family thinks his lifestyle is “wrong”.

  9. This article made me angry that others are inflicting their own opinion and religion on others not even knowing the person they are doing this too. One of my biggest pet peeves is when others try to inflict their religious beliefs on me, everyone has the right to their own religion and belief but not to force it upon others in such a way that they did in this article. Although I am not religious at the slightest I respect others beliefs, but when something like this comes up it angers me that they would be so opinionated to affect others lives negatively and put them down because they don’t believe in the same thing as you. I am very glad that this was brought to the news and publicized, it shows who ever did this that it is not acceptable and that others do not support them. The way that the victim went about it made me proud and happy. He stood up for himself and who he is and that is all. Bringing this story to the news calls out whoever did this and that’s the way it should be.
